The quick answer

What are you storing?

Tap the closest match for a starting size. It's a rough guide - the calculator gets more exact.

Pick an option above to see a suggested size.

Storing pallets, business stock or a vehicle? Those depend on driveway and roller-door access as well as size - see below.

Home size vs unit size

As a general guide, here's the space most households need. Unit sizes are floor area in square metres (m²).

These are rough estimates. If you have a lot of tools, outdoor gear or bulky furniture, size up.

Every size, and what fits in it

We name units after familiar spaces, like closets and garages, so they're easier to picture. Tap "Size guide" on any photo to see a to-scale animation.

Pallets, business stock or a vehicle?

These need more than floor area. Driveway access, roller-door access and the shape of the unit all matter, and they vary by location. Call 1800 SPACES and the team will match you to the right site and unit.

Work out your size in five steps

A few minutes of prep means you pay for the space you need, and nothing you don't.

  1. 1
    List your items by room
Go room by room (bedroom, living room, kitchen, garage, office) and note each item's rough size and how fragile it is. Include awkward pieces like bikes, pianos, kayaks or gym equipment. They take more floor space and can't always be stacked.
  2. 2
    Measure your biggest items
Record the length, width and height of large items, measuring irregular shapes at the widest point. To see the floor area they need, mark out their footprint with masking tape on your garage or living room floor. A sofa or a stack of boxes can take up more than you expect.
  3. 3
    Think about how you'll pack
Taking furniture apart, using matching boxes and standing items on end all save space. See the packing tips below.
  4. 4
    Decide how often you'll visit
Storing during a move or renovation? You'll only unload once, so you can pack tighter. Popping in for seasonal gear, business stock or keepsakes? Leave a central walkway and keep the things you need at the front. For long-term storage, leave a little extra room so you can add things later.
  5. 5
Match it to a unit size
Use the guide above, or let the calculator do it. If you land between two sizes, go up one. It's easier and cheaper than moving everything into a bigger unit later.

Get more out of your unit

Smart packing can make a smaller unit work, and keeps your things in better shape.

Pack smart
Stick to one or two box sizes, tape them securely and label several sides. Heavy boxes go on the bottom, lighter ones on top.
Use the height
Stack boxes to the ceiling if you can, and stand couches and mattresses on end. Portable shelves suit small items like tools.
Keep a walkway
Even in a small unit, a narrow aisle saves time and backache when you need to find something. Put what you'll need often at the front.
Protect delicate pieces
Cover mattresses and furniture with breathable cloth. Wrap glassware and artwork in bubble wrap or blankets, and don't stack heavy items on fragile ones.
Take furniture apart
Removing the legs from tables, bed frames and shelving makes them much more compact.
Plan for growth
If your household or business is about to grow, choose one size up. Need boxes? See the packing list.

Storage size questions

Q. How do I know what size storage unit I need?

Start with the quick match or the home size guide above, or add your items to the size calculator for a more exact answer. If you're still unsure, call 1800 SPACES and the team will help.

Q. What if I'm between two sizes?

Go up one. A slightly larger unit protects your belongings from being squashed together, leaves room for a walkway, and gives you space to add more later. That's easier and cheaper than moving everything into a bigger unit down the track.

Q. Should I just book a much bigger unit to be safe?

One size up is sensible. Several sizes up usually isn't. Rates are based on size, so matching your needs to the right category means you don't pay for space you won't use.

Q. What if I choose the wrong size?

The best fix is to check before you book, using the calculator or by calling 1800 SPACES. If your needs change after you've moved in, talk to your store team about your options. There are no lock-in contracts.

Q. Will my bed, sofa or piano fit?

Measure it, then mark its footprint on the floor with masking tape. As a guide, a Quarter Garage typically fits a double bed, TV and stand, and a two-seater couch. A Half Garage takes a queen bed, lounge suite, dining set and appliances. A piano fits comfortably in a 3/4 Garage.

Q. How high are the units?

Most are 2.4m to 2.7m high, so there's plenty of room to stack boxes up and stand mattresses or couches on end. Unit sizes are floor area in square metres (m²).

Q. Are unit sizes the same at every location?

Not exactly. Sizes and configurations vary by location, so check the current sizes at your nearest Rent a Space, or ask the team to help you view the size you're considering.

Q. How much does each size cost?

Rates are based on size, and they vary by location and current offers. Choose a location to see live prices, or read the Sydney storage price guide on rentaspace.com.au.

Q. Can I store pallets, business stock or a vehicle?

Yes, at many locations, but access requirements vary by site. Business stock on pallets may need roller-door access, and vehicles need a drive-up or outdoor space with driveway access. Call 1800 SPACES and the team will match you to the right location and unit.

Q. When can I get to my unit, and how secure is it?

Access is 6am–9pm every day, including public holidays. Every unit is individually alarmed and secured with your own lock, with CCTV and personal PIN-code access.

Q. Do I need insurance?

Optional contents cover (StoreProtect) is available. It's never compulsory.

Q. Is the truck and driver really free?

Free truck & driver move-in is available where eligible, but it isn't offered on all unit sizes, and offers vary by location and availability. A small one-time admin fee applies on move-in, shown before you book. See the promotion terms & conditions.

Q. How do I book?

Booking is completed on rentaspace.com.au. Pick your location, choose a size, and reserve online. It opens in a new tab so this guide stays here. Prefer to talk it through? Request a call back below.
